Sew Along With June-Block Four
I know its not Valentines Day, but we all need a little love right now , so this week the block is a heart.
First step is of course the Cutting:
2 patterned charm squares trimmed to 4 1/2"
Plus you will need 2 patterned charm squares not trimmed
(4) 1 1/2" squares of background fabric
(2) 5 inch squares of background fabric
(2) rectangles cut 8 1/2" x 2 1/2"
(2) rectangles cut 12 1/2" x 2 1/2"
Heart Top
Draw a diagonal line on the 1 1/2" squares.Place these little squares on the top of one of the charms… one on each side of each charm . (see following picture)
Sew and trim to ½ " and press seams open.
Trim to 4 1/2".
Repeat with one other charm.
Heart Bottom
Make 2 half triangle squares using the remaining 2 untrimmed charms and the 5 inch background squares. Draw the diagonal line on the back of the charm squares and sew on the line to the background squared. Trim and Press. OR you can draw the diagonal line and sew ¼" either side of the line and make 2 half triangle squares out of each set. There is enough fabric. Use one and save one for a future project…add it to your box of orphan blocks. (That reminds me , I must do something with all my orphan blocks before they riot and take over my sewing room!!!)
Arrange the units as shown in the following picture and sew as a 4 patch.
Sew the 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles to the sides of your heart (the fabric one that is not your real heart…that would hurt). Press toward the rectangles.
Sew the12 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles to the top and bottom of your heart. Press toward the rectangles.
Square up to a 12 1/2" square.
There you have a beautiful heart!
What little girl wouldn’t like a whole quilt of these hearts?
